Bay to Breakers: The Course

Okay. I just watched this video of the B2B course on YouTube: http://youtu.be/Ec6Q6ODEr-I. The Hayes Street hill looks like four to five (4-5) blocks of long, uphill running. Not sure about that. I should definitely go walk the course at least once. I mean, there are only two (2) weeks left till race day. I'm a little sore from yesterdays run in the park, so I believe today is a cycling day, even if it is still windy out.

Update: Got my ride on:

DC Bike Path/Streets: Cycling: (10.46) miles. Burned (656) Calories.

Good one.

After far too much dilly-dallying today I finally got out and did some training:

DC Bike Path: Walk/Jog/Walk, 4x; Total: (5.05) miles. Burned: (593) Calories. Pace-avg: (15:57)min./mile. Speed-avg: (3.8) mph. Speed-max: (6.5)mph. Good training, even in (20) mph winds, which may have been slower inside the park.

Since the Hayes Street hill looks like a long slow climb (at least in Google Earth) I am making sure to add some slopes in my training. There are several spots in the park that I can use, and I need to try to use each of them. I am also aiming towards doing a walk/jog/walk of the whole park, or at least the (8.86) miles of it that I normally ride. This way, I know that I will be able to manage the whole 12K of the B2B in two (2) weeks. Wow. Hard to believe it's only two weeks away, now.

Time to stretch out, get some food, shower, and hit the Sports Authority before they close.

Another Beautiful Day Out

The sun is out, the temperature is (76) deg.F. and the wind isn't too strong. Had a good training "run" in the park:

DC Bike Path: Walk/Jog/Walk: (3.26) miles total. Pace-avg: (15:46) min./mile. Speed-avg: (3.8) mph. Max-speed: (6.4) mph. Burned: (376) Calories. Not bad! No pain in my knees, and I've made it into the solid Jog speed zone.

My previous best was just in the Slow Jog speed zone. Glad to see I am improving. I bought more Wright Socks Cool Mesh at Fleet Feet Stockton yesterday, and some more sport gels to use with training. I really needed more socks: trying to rotate between just two (2) pairs really wasn't cutting it. I wish the store carried darker colours, like grey or black, because my sweat stains white fabrics so easily [because of medication I'm taking]. Well, Fleet Feet in Stockton may not carry them in different colours, but Zappos does here. Or I could just order them direct from Wright Sock.

Despite the testimonials on Zappos saying to buy a size larger, I went with the size Large (fits shoe size (10-13) and have had no problems. I dry them on low and do not use a fabric sheet (I wash and dry my sports clothes together). [Someone advised me that using a fabric softener sheet in the dryer with your sports gear can "clog up" the breathable fabrics, causing them to perform poorly.] But since they are dual-layer socks one needs to make sure to adjust the sock so it doesn't bunch up, or have multiple layers bunched up. It's somewhat easy to tell when they are bunched up, so just pluck the sock and smooth it out wherever you see it bunching. To date I have had no blisters or hot-spots on my feet using these socks with my Brooks Trance 10 running shoes, even when I was just walking around Disneyland and the San Diego Zoo last week. That reminds me that I still need to write about last week in more detail.

Happy Easter

Yes, Easter was this past Sunday, but I'm just now getting to my post regarding it. All of my mom's brothers and sisters showed up, except one family; and one of the grand-kids and his family were with his wife's family for Easter this year.

Our extended family usually tries to get together for the big holidays: Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas (which I normally refer to as X-mas). We have sometimes gathered on the 4th of July, though I can't recall when. One of the more entertaining members of the family is Uncle Dave. He is the oldest, the tallest (at 70+ years old he is still taller than me, and I am 6'2"), the first to leave home, which means he didn't grow up in the house where I spent so much time getting to know my grandparents. They had moved to the new house after he had left because there were more and more kids in the family. He spent his youth playing basketball for his schools, won a basketball scholarship to his university, and even still holds the #2 basketball record for his school, fifty years later. [Sorry, I forget what the record is for specifically, but he sounded a little disappointed when he was told this by Margie, the wife of his brother Chris, who Googled the information.]

Dave is usually the one regaling us all with stories of growing up in Modesto in the Fifties and Sixties, working the orchards picking fruit and/or working in the local canneries during the summer. Modesto still has a pretty large agricultural business, and we still have canneries running. He would always tell us about how good the fruits and vegetables were back then, compared to the crappy waxy, hard, under-ripe crap we get at the supermarkets nowadays. The few times I have bought fruit at a Farmer's Market, I understood what he meant. I once bought some terrific peaches at the market in downtown San Jose back around 2002, or so. I was with my friend Aimee, and told her she had to try the peaches. She agreed, they were fantastic. I'm craving some of those peaches right now; they were so good they are still that memorable.

This year, Uncle Mark had some good stories. As my aunts and uncles will tell you, Grandpa was famously stingy, at least within the family. For school clothes, the rule was one (1) new pair of pants, and one (1) new pair of shoes, per child, per school year, no matter how much you were still growing. [This was back in the days when boys had to wear a button-down shirt and tie to school.] Now, for this family, that is just plain trouble, because we are all quite tall, men and women, both. [Mom actually calls herself the runt of the litter. I believe I grew taller than her when I was still in 6th grade.]  Mark told us how one year he grew so fast that he was wearing high floods before the end of the school year. We laughed.

And the boys in the family being athletic types, they were always playing in their school clothes after school. Some of you reading this may remember that once upon a time fabric stores sold iron-on patches to cover the holes in the knees of your pants, or wherever else the garment wore thin. Mark said he felt like they really made it when Grandma would actually iron on the patches inside of the knees, instead of on the outside like everyone else. We laughed more.

Then Mark told us how the twin bed he slept on in the middle of the house (which was once a porch, but the previous owners had built out over the porch and turned the old porch and patio into a second living-room, i,e, Grandpa's TV room, where he also kept his electric organ) was getting shorter and shorter. Grandma told his brother Chris to extend the bed because Mark just wouldn't stop growing! Chris used his metal shop skills to weld on an extension to the bed-frame, which gave them room to add a big hunk of foam-rubber mattress at the foot of the bed so Mark's feet weren't hanging over the edge into space. We all busted up. We were laughing like hyenas even before Mark got this far in his story. He had starting cracking up just when he was remembering and recounting the story to begin with, and it all went down-hill from there. My brother and I agreed neither of us had laughed that hard in months. B-)

Exercise: None today.

Watching: Revolution OS on Netflix. Watching this program is making me itchy to get my geek on, dangit!

Beautiful Day Out

Finally got some real exercise in this week: Today I went out for a bike ride to warm up for my walk/jog training:

DC Bike Path: Cycling: (8.87) miles, Pace: (5:16)min./mi. Burned: (584) Calories.

DC Bike Path: Walk/Jog/Walk. (3.08) miles. Pace-avg: (17:29) min./mile. Speed-avg: (3.4) mph. Burned: (358) Calories. No achy knees today. Increased the Jog portion to two (2) minutes. No problems. B-)

During the cycling phase, on my outbound lap, I nearly T/C'd a rider who was coming around the bend, a blind curve, because he and his buddy we riding side-by-side. We both saw each other and hit our brakes, skidding to a halt,  so we did not collide. That would have been messy (i.e. bloody) and painful. [It's days like this I think maybe I should buy one of those mini-camcorders to mount on my helmet, or maybe a set that is built into sunglasses, so I can record some of the things that happen on my rides. Just a thought.] Now, never-mind that the park has signs all along the path, in both directions, that say "KEEP RIGHT," and one might think they would be obeyed, especially on a blind-curve. I would also expect that maybe someone might think it was a Good Idea (tm) to maybe ride single-file when rounding curves like these. But then again, I could just be out of my mind. I am pretty sure that no one bothers to read these, especially those clusters of people that walk five abreast across the width of the path, and have kids and pets running back and forth across the path, right in front of joggers and cyclists. Maybe an air-horn is in order... }:->  *Mwuahahahaa*

Anyway, I made it back without further incident. Once home I changed into my sweet Brooks Trance 10 running shoes, put on my UnderArmor ninja hood and big floppy hat to keep the sun off my neck and the breeze out of my ears, strapped on my iPod and hit the bike path on foot. During my ride I noticed that there was quite a crowd in the park today. This was unsurprising seeing as how it was over (70) deg.F. and with only a little breeze. Plenty of people were out walking their dogs. Some of those dogs look kinda' mean, and I have never been a dog fan, and the people walking those meaner looking dogs tend to look a bit shady, so I am glad I have my Spyderco with me at all times; that and my cell-phone. That's one part of the Boy Scout motto I try to practice: "Be Prepared."

Anyway, time to get cleaned up and work on the bathroom a bit. Company has already arrived.

The week in review

Here is a brief re-cap of the past week. I expect to add more details in individual posts for each day:

2011-04-17:
Sunday
Wake: 0700 hrs,; Bed: 2345 hrs.
Arrived in Anaheim at 1730 hrs. Checked into hotel. Had a pre-dinner walk of (2.94) miles around the perimeter of Disneyland. Dinner at Tony Roma's. Good food, very cute waitress/server. Got back to room with hotel wi-fi access info, can't login. *sigh* Poor signal in our room.
Lunch: 6 oz. tri-tip w/ veg medley at Sizzler's in Bakersfield.
Dinner: Tony Roma's; Chicken Bacon sandwich w/ fries. Very filling, very good.

2011-04-18:
Monday
Wake-up: 0700 hrs., Bed: 2330 hrs.
Breakfast: wheat toast with butter and grape jelly, OJ, coffee w/ cream & sugar.
Disneyland! all day.
Lunch: Mahi-Mahi sandwich (baked) w/ fries, water.
More Disneyland, back to the room for a couple hours. Finally got wi-fi access by sitting in the hotel lobby. [Really should have taken my Apple Airport Express to use as a signal booster for this trip. I won't forget next time.]
Dinner: Mimi's. Sweet & sour chicken w/ brown rice. Appetizer bread: Carrot, sour-dough and banana. Really good.

2011-04-19:
Tuesday
Wake: 0745 hrs. Bed: 0030 hrs.
Breakfast: Denny's Western Omelet w/ side of sausage (4 links) & sourdough toast.
Arrived in San Diego @ 1145 hrs.
Toured the USS Midway till 1600 hrs. Took lots of pics.
Bought a replacement/back-up battery for my camera, but it turns out after closer inspection that it is for a different Canon camera model, and replaces NB-8L, not NB-4L, which is what I needed. My fault for not looking more closely at the label on both batteries. :-/
Outlet shopping in X till 2100 hrs. Found a pair of jeans at Tommy Hilfiger that fit me: size (38) waist, (34) length. Did not realize I could actually fit size (38) anything now. Rock on!
Back at the hotel charging my devices and getting internet access. Yes!

2011-04-20:
Wednesday
Wake: 0800 hrs.; Bed: 2400 hrs.
Breakfast: The Waffle Spot: French toast, scrambled eggs, 4x sausage links, 1x glass water, 1x glass OJ, 2x cups coffee w/ cream & sugar.
Activity: San Diego Zoo (Balboa Park): About (1.00) hour, abut (1.94) miles, and (383) Calories. We spent several hours at the San Diego Zoo, but due to the slow walking pace, and starts/stops, this data may not be accurate. The big cats were mostly sleeping when we got to them at about 1500-1700 hrs. One (1x) Grevy's Zebra, and the lone male elephant both let their business swing freely for the crowds. *snicker* [Insert Beavis and Butt-head chuckles here.]
Lunch: 1400 hrs., Hot dog and Pirate's Booty "cheese puffs."
Dinner: Monsoon Indian cuisine: Chicken Tikka Masala, Spicy Chana Masala, Naan (2x), Fanta Orange soda. Had to shovel it in due to time constraints for getting to the movie.
Movie: "Hop". It was cute. Some laughs; I was tired and achy from walking all day.

2011-04-21:
Thursday
Wake: 0830 hrs.; Bed: 2400 hrs.
Breakfast: Granola cereal.
Activity: Balboa Park. We visited the San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park. They have a pretty great exhibit all-around, and we also visited their SPACE: Special Exhibit, which is a separate exhibition of space exploration with a look at NASA's plans for future Moon and Mars landings.
Lunch: I forget.
Dinner: Gordon Biersch. Sweet and Spicy Cashew Chicken (awesome!) and a GB Märzen beer.

2011-04-22:
Friday
Wake: 0730 hrs.
Breakfast: Granola cereal
Activity: Drive home to Modesto.
Depart: 0808 hrs.
Lunch: Carl's Jr. Chicken Club sandwich.
Home: 1616 hrs.

Catching up on TV. Real internet access again. Aah.

Hardcore

This morning I thought to myself,"I vant to be HAHRDcore!" just like Ahnold. So after considerable dilly-dallying, i.e. taking a shower, emptying the dishwasher, cleaning the dirty dishes in the sink, eating a light breakfast of wheat toast with strawberry-lemon marmalade and a cup of cappucino (International House powdered), scrubbing the bathroom sink, scrubbing the toilet, then spending some time online in Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO), I finally got out and did it:

Street/MCR: Rode bike to gym, worked out in "Fit In 30" Room, then rode home. Total distance: (7.61) mi., total time: (1:26:45.08) hrs. Burned: (564) Calories.

Not a bad workout. The ride to the gym was good, windy, but good. I started to fade a bit during my second lap in the "Fit In 30" room, but I pushed through all three (3) laps, then chugged water, and took a breather for a few minutes, talked to one of the attendants at the counter, then got on my bike and rode home. The wind was with me on the way home, mostly, so that was a bonus. I need to stretch out and eat, soon. My stomach is demanding food.

Update: I added a new picture of my bike on the Equipment page, and replaced the old one in the Header background image. Feel free to comment. I also finally got around to mounting my new bike lock bracket. It looks awkward and it does not interfere with pedaling, even though it looks like it should. Unless I'm riding somewhere I expect to lock up my bike, I'll probably leave the lock at home. I still wish I had not lost my old U-lock late last year. I'm pretty sure I set it on the hood of my car (black lock on a black car), while it was in the shade of the car-port, then promptly forgot about it, and drove off later to run an errand, not realizing the lock was still laying on the car hood. *sigh* I did remember it, later on, and tried looking for it around my neighbourhood, but no luck finding it.
